“THE SPIRIT OF DISCERNMENT”

“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits.” (Mt 7:15–16a)

The Lord does not leave us in the dark about the dangers that lie in wait on our path of discipleship. It would be unthinkable for Him not to do so, for otherwise we would easily lull ourselves into a false sense of security. As a good shepherd, He not only protects us but also gives us criteria by which we can recognize false prophets.

This is not always easy, for such false prophets can disguise themselves. They may speak of peace and proclaim it in every possible way, but they do not have in mind the peace that comes from the heart of God. They do not teach that one must first be reconciled with God. They may proclaim to us a world full of peace—yet this is not founded on God and thus resembles the Tower of Babel.

Perhaps they proclaim love and harmony, thereby tapping into a primal longing in the human heart. But they forget that love and truth belong together if it is not to become a deception, and without God, that is not possible.

That is why Jesus points us to the fruits. Are they healthy? Are they good?

A help in recognizing false prophets more easily is deep familiarity with Jesus. If we know His voice, we will notice more quickly when words and actions are heading in the wrong direction. They are then surrounded by a kind of murky fog and lack the clarity that emanates from the Word of God and His deeds. Only these bring deep joy to the soul.

Furthermore, we can always ask the Lord for His Spirit, so that He may help us recognize false prophets and protect us from them.
