YOU ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

“You are the light of the world. (…)Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Mt 5:14a,16)

These wonderful words are addressed to the Lord’s disciples—that is, to us! Through union with Jesus, we are not only illuminated by His light, but we ourselves become light by passing on God’s Word and learning to do His works. And since the divine Master, the Son of God, tells us this, it is no presumption.

And indeed, the light is meant to shine! People are to recognize how good our Father in heaven is. Everyone who does the good deeds of God and thus contributes to the glorification of God will confess that they are done in God, and therefore that glory belongs to our Father.

To praise Him with our lives and to serve Him is the highest calling that can be bestowed upon us. Every time we sincerely strive to do the Father’s will and grow into an attitude of service, the light of our lives will shine brighter. It is meant to be seen—not for our own glory, but for the glory of God!

It is the joy of the angels to see us, when, united with them, we zealously fulfill our task on earth. In all things they are at our service, just as are the saints who already live in glory with God. They never tire of supporting us, for the fact that the praise of our Heavenly Father resounds on earth as well brings them joy too!

And our Father? He fills us with His love and is grateful to those who serve Him.
