“Holiness consists simply in doing God’s will and being exactly what God wants us to be.” (St. Thérèse of Lisieux)
St. Thérèse’s God-given simplicity shows us that every person can walk this path of holiness. For us, this means seeking to know God’s will. Jesus made it clear that we show our love for Him by following His commands and living in God’s grace. If we live this way, we will understand the Lord’s instructions more and more clearly, and, endowed with the Spirit of Counsel, we will learn to discern God’s will ever more fully in whatever situation we find ourselves.
The path is simple because it is not our Father who makes our lives complicated and burdensome. Often it is our own will—harboring other desires and ideas about life and not sufficiently submitted to the Lord’s gentle yoke—that holds us back on the path of discipleship.
This does not mean there is no suffering along such a path. However, our Heavenly Father’s promise always stands: He will accompany us and provide us with everything we need to overcome each situation in the Holy Spirit.
If we sincerely follow the path of His guidance through the Holy Spirit, He will transform us from within, and we will become what God desires—we will become like His Son. This happens day by day as we learn to live under the inner guidance of the Holy Spirit. He is our masterful Friend.
Objectively speaking, this is simple. For it to become subjectively easier and easier, we need to be willing to let God’s love purify and enlighten us.
