“I have deep trust in my dear Father in Heaven that all will be well, and therefore I await all things to come with inner peace.” (Saint Elizabeth of Dijon)
These words come from a Carmelite nun known by her religious name, Elizabeth of the Most Holy Trinity.
What an enviable state she describes here! Even as a child, she loved the Lord and testified, “I loved to pray, and I loved God so much that, even before my First Holy Communion, I could not understand how one could give one’s heart to anyone else.”
Sometimes there are people who seem to have been born with such trust. But there are also those in whom this trust develops only gradually through an inner journey with the Lord.
Through M. Eugenia’s Little Book of the Father, we learn how earnestly our Father asks for this trust, which is very close to His heart. It is about opening our hearts to our Father and allowing Him to share His love with us. When we know we are loved by God and are certain of this love, we can face whatever comes with peace of mind.
It is important to understand this, for it means that the trusting expectation that the things to come will turn out well is a fruit of a deepened love for God. This implies that there may also be difficult periods: crosses that must be borne, valleys that must be traversed, and unexpected events that occur and must be faced. However, our deep trust in our loving Father not only carries us through these times but is also the light that enables us, through faith, to understand that whatever may come remains firmly in God’s hands and will lead to good.
Such trust honors our beloved Father. We can ask Him for it and take steps of trust every day.
