“The saints will help and serve you” (Inner Word).
These promises are important to those of us who strive to serve the Lord by following Christ. The saints are our dearest friends in this endeavor because they are perfected in God’s love and love for their neighbors. How could they do anything other than rush to the aid of those who are still on the journey, who have not yet reached the goal and need so much support? How could they look away when their friends are still on the way! There is nothing strange about this; just as the Lord served His disciples, so they rush to serve us, their brothers and sisters. We can and should certainly look to them as role models, revere them, and be grateful that they completed their course by the grace of God. Yet this does not create distance. Rather, it bestows a special closeness and intimacy in the Lord. Our heavenly Father has placed them at our side, and the more we share with them, the more present the communion of saints becomes.
It is important to understand that they serve us, for we are—just as with the holy angels—united in the same goal: our lives are meant to reflect the glory of God. This is the source of their zeal, which does not wane even though they are already with God in eternity. Therefore, we need not hesitate to ask them for help. On the contrary, they are waiting for it! Just as we are happy when we can help someone, they are happy to help us, and they do so with a completely pure heart.
Don’t forget: Don’t just admire the saints; work with them for the Kingdom of God. It is their joy!
