“THE GREATEST TALENT”

“’Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much.’” (Mt 25:20b–21)

God has given everyone gifts so they can serve His kingdom and bear fruit for others. Yet how many of God’s wonderful gifts are often lost or—even worse—used to spread the kingdom of death! Some people believe they have no great gifts, or they consider their own to be of little value. But in doing so, they adopt merely human notions. Perhaps, as Christians, they think of the so‑called “flamboyant charisms” and feel they lack them.

St. Paul shows us a way to offer the Lord what is most beautiful. In his First Epistle to the Corinthians, he lists the many gifts the Lord has entrusted to His Church. After listing them, he sings the hymn of love: “Love never ends; as for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.” (1 Cor. 13:8) And he adds: “So faith, hope, love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” (1 Cor. 13:13)

Surely each of us would like to meet our Father in such a way that we have multiplied our talents and receive His praise. But what if we don’t discover much in ourselves—no particular wisdom or skill, no outstanding charisms?

It doesn’t matter. We simply give God our best. We try to do everything out of love for Him—every gesture, no matter how small—and then we give ourselves.

How will the Lord view this? We can only guess: It will be indestructible gold in God’s treasuries, in which our Father delights.
