“The truth is like love. The more you speak it and put it into practice, the deeper it penetrates your being and shapes who you are” (Inner Word).
Living in the truth and speaking the truth is the highest good and makes us like the Son of God, who can say of Himself: “I am the truth.” (cf. John 14:6) While lies and insincerity distort our lives, the truth is different. It does not tolerate lies or pretense; rather, it shapes us according to the image in which God created us.
Just as love grows within us when we practice it and place our lives under its rule, so it is with the truth. It will not rest until it has illuminated the deepest corners of our existence and made us conform to it. It will give us a delightful taste of itself, and this can become so strong that any form of insincerity actually causes a spiritual unease, both in regard to ourselves and in our encounters with others.
It will also make us very sensitive when the spirit of falsehood spreads throughout society and, in the worst case, even within the Holy Church.
Thank God that He opens up the sources of truth to us so richly: His holy words, the authentic teachings of the Church, and, above all, His Son, who bears witness to our heavenly Father. Thus, the Lord testifies before Pilate: “For this I was born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Every one who is of the truth hears my voice.” (John 18:37).
If we guide and shape our entire life by the truth and bear witness to it in word and deed, then we become witnesses to our Lord. Some will be able to hear and read this testimony!
